There has been backlash about the rating because of the amount of violence. Mike Birbiglia's newest movie, Don't Think Twice got an R-rating because of adults smoking pot. Yet, Suicide Squad has "machine gun killings and bombings" according to Birbiglia. Filmmaker Judd Apatow also had a bit to say about the rating. He claimed that "studios own the ratings board" and therefore "make pot and sex the scary thing so they seem caring." The MPAA has made some odd decisions when it comes to movie ratings in the past. For example, Boyhood was rated R in the states for no apparent reason. Also, Philomena was originally given an R-rating. Luckily for The Weinstein Company, they were able to appeal the rating and get it down to a PG-13.
Here are my thoughts on the issue:
1. Suicide Squad probably should have an R-rating based on the trailers that have been released.
2. Don't Think Twice and Apatow's films also deserve their R-ratings.
3. Parents can still monitor what their kids are watching so this shouldn't be blown out of proportion.
4. Based on reviews, Suicide Squad might not be worth seeing anyways so we shouldn't make a huge fuss.
